Spiritual Disciplines by Month

Join us as we incorporate spiritual disciplines into our lives in order to grow in our relationship with Jesus. From Sept '20 - August '21  we will highlight and practice one discipline each month with the goal of drawing closer to Jesus.

Much of our content and guidance comes from the book "Celebration of Discipline" by Richard Foster.  While not required for practicing these disciplines, it may be helpful to purchase or borrow a copy of the book

September - Meditation

"Christian meditation, very simply, is the ability to hear God's voice and obey his word." - Richard Foster, 'Celebration of Discipline'
Meditate on these passages
Ephesians 2:8-9 - God's Grace to You (9/13-19)
Ephesians 3:20-21 - God's Power In You (9/20-26)
Ephesians 4:4-7 - God's Unity Through You (9/27-10/3)

October - Simplicity

"The spiritual discipline of simplicity provides the needed perspective. Simplicity sets us free to receive the provision of God as a gift that is not ours to keep and can be freely shared with others." - Richard Foster, 'Celebration of Discipline'
Inner Attitudes of Simplicity
- To receive what we have as a gift from God
- To know that it is God's business, and not ours, to care for what we have
- To have our goods available to others

November - Confession

"Without the cross the discipline of confession would be only psychologically therapeutic. But it is so much more. It involves an objective change in our relationship with God and a subjective change in us." - Richard Foster, 'Celebration of Discipline'

December - Prayer

"To pray is to change. Prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us." - Richard Foster, 'Celebration of Discipline'

January - Solitude

"Settle yourself in solitude and you will come upon Him in yourself." - Teresa of Avila

February - Worship

"To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to feed the mind with the truth of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, to devote the will to the purpose of God." - William Temple

March - Fasting

"Throughout scripture fasting refers to abstaining from food for spiritual purposes." - Richard Foster, 'Celebration of Discipline'

April - Submission

"In submission, we recognize the legitimate authority of others over us." - Richard Foster, 'Celebration of Discipline'

May - Guidance

"Dwell in the life and love and power and wisdom of God, in unity one with another and with God; and the peace and wisdom of God fill your hearts, that nothing may rule in  you but the life, which stands in the Lord God." - George Fox

June - Study

"We study scripture to know God more and to know His will and purpose for our lives." - The Gospel Outpost

July - Service

"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example that you also should do as I have done to you." - Jesus, John 13:14-15

August - Celebration

"Celebration is central to all the spiritual disciplines. Without a joyful spirit of festivity the disciplines become dull, death-breathing tools in the hands of modern Pharisees. Every discipline should be characterized by carefee gaiety and a sense of thanksgiving." - Richard Foster, 'Celebration of Discipline'
